Frequently Asked Questions
Which pedestals are available for my sundial?
Most of our sundials works with one of two bases. Others have a wider variety of selection. Just make your selection from the drop down menu. To see the bases go to the sundial pedestals section.
Should I get a Pedestal?
It entirely depends on your choice. You can lie sundials on the ground or your can put them on a table or stand. All pedestals we sell affix to a matching sundial, so that they can't fall off of them. You can put our sundials on other pedestals, but only our matching pedestals are guaranteed to affix to your sundial. More than half of our customers purchase a pedestal with their sundial and our feedback tells us that they feel it makes all the difference. If you are unsure, just order the sundial alone and see how it looks on the ground and then set it up about two feet and see if the pedestal is what you need. The sundial and pedestal ship separately.
Is it difficult to attach the sundial to a pedestal?
Attaching most of our sundials to a matching pedestal takes only a few minutes. You merely screw the bolt into the sundial, and spin your sundial around until it is snug on your base. Then line the gnomon up to true north and you are good to go. Once you've found true north you can adjust it for daylight savings time by a slight rotation.
Do you have any tips on attracting birds to my sundial that's also a bird bath?
It helps to have your sundial next to a low hanging branch where a quick flutter and a hop puts birds out of harms way. Instinctively, they go to watering pools that are next to low hanging branches. Nature provides these places on boulders and other unusual formations.
What is "Sand Casting?"
Sand casting is a laborious way to cast metal, but the finish and charm it creates is worth the effort. Complicated. Old school. Awesome.
When a sand cast is made, a compressed sand mold is created; molten aluminum is poured into it; and the mold is destroyed with you a sundial emerging free from a pile of steamy, oily sand.
Why Use Recycled Aluminum?
Aluminum doesn't rust, making this a sundial that will out last even you. It's the cheapest and most effective material to recycle as far as its carbon footprint. There is charm in knowing that this new ancient timekeeper is made from beer cans, foil, and other recycled aluminum products. In a sense, the sundial holds all the memories of those vessels.
I keep seeing the term “Gnomon” what is it?
A gnomon is the arm or artistic item that creates either the Sun’s shadow or directs or shapes his light in a way that time can be revealed.
How accurate are these sundials?
Most sundials vary plus or minus 15 minutes over the year. That is because of the "equation of time" which calculates the differences sundials have because of the tilt of the earth and it's orbit. The charm of sundials is that the Sun keeps time on its terms, not ours.
